Description Set in a Dublin tenement during the Civil War, it concerns the misfortunes of the Boyle family. Charley Bentham, schoolmaster and lawyer's apprentice, brings news of a will by which Boyle is to inherit a legacy. Two months later Bentham has fled to England, leaving Mary pregnant, and the will has proved to be defective. The terrified son Johnny is taken out by two Republican Irregulars and shot. Juno, the "paycock's" wife, tries in vain to hold a ruined family together.
