Description Adelaide born Lucy Guerin returns to her hometown riding a wave of phenomenal success. She has made a work for Mikhail Baryshnikov's company White Oak Project, and her star is very much on the rise all over the world. The two works we see are the gut-wrenching , body-blasting Heavy featuring four dancers plus live music mix by dj Jad McAdam, and Robbery Waitress on Bail, inspired by the blood and guts tabloids and danced by Lucy Guerin and Ros Warby.
Heavy is a dance inspired by sleep stages one to four, REM, sleep disorders and dreams.
Robbery Waitress on Bail draws it's inspiration from the pages of Melbourne's tabloids. Its starting point is the laconic report of a waitress who acts as a hostage in a robbery while her fiance holds a knife to her throat in the all night cafe where she works. The couple escape with $25,000, but are later apprehended and sentenced in court.
While the text, projected onto two screens, summarises these events dispassionately and concisely, the dance pursues a different course. Exploring the atmosphere and psychological foundations of the story, it insinuates the emotional extremes of the situation that are so glaringly omitted from the newspaper account. The music adds a third layer to the discourse, on the different perspectives from which text and movement describe experience. The dance vocabulary hints at literal meaning and character while evoking an intense world of trash, fear, complicity and abandon.
