Description Don Jose is not the first man to fall for Carmen's seductive and deceptive wiles, and nor will he be the last. But the mysterious and sensual gypsy leads this innocent soldier from his duties into a world of bullfighting, smuggling and wild dancing, where the turn of a card will decide his fate, and hers. Carmen is Bizet's best-known opera, and one of the most popular operas of all time. It was first performed in 1875 and has been a central part of the operatic repertoire ever since.
