Description The Measure is an outdoor performance installation. Its strategy is to create catalytic connections between the fields of science, sport and theatre.

The stage is a 35m x 50m grid of bright orange traffic cones. The four performers are dressed in white uniforms that recall cricket uniform or perhaps Victorian anthropologists. The stage action is more suggestive than concrete. It consists of intricate, repetitious and measured choreographed movements suggesting a sporting contest or a strange scientific experiment. Following extended periods of repetitious and tedious action there are occasional energetic bursts of movement which can be at times humorous as well as dramatic. There is a subdued soundtrack throughout.

The seductive and ritualised tedium of the event alienates or draws the spectator into an intricately constructed game of obsession and intrigue which is always only ever on the verge of making sense.

Spectators are invited to view the performance from different perspectives. There is no pre-determined performance length and the spectators are free to view all or part of the event.

The Measure was performed on University Campuses in NSW and Victoria. The Sydney Festival, Perth Festival Adelaide Festival Fringe and a special one off performance in Collins street Melbourne. Perhaps the most successful performances were those at the Sydney Festival at Circular Quay (1995), Perth Festival (1995),in a city square and in the Collins street Melbourne where the audience were most likely to have stumbled on the the event in the course of some other activity.
