"We are drawn to what people confess to feeling, doing, knowing. One particular series of anonymous (un-gendered, un-aged, un-cultured) confessions facinate me. They served to 're-catalyse' my preoccupation with the sameness of our 'stuggle' to be human that, inside the sameness, yields incredible and individual differences. I propose that this struggle breeds a defiance that works against a feeling of descent or spiralling downwards. It is an interest in the tawdry sadness of our lives and then, what it is to feel both swamped by existence and emptied by it." |
