Yue Ling Jie (Moon Spirit Feasting) is a new opera of passionate energy and radiant beauty drawing its inspiration from puppet shows, movies, trance rituals and Chinese operas performed in the streets to entertain the spirits during the Chinese 'Hungry Ghost Festival'. The work retells several different versions of the story of the moon-goddess Chang O - the woman who steals the 'herb of immortality' from the Archer Hou Yi and is exiled to the moon. In 2000 one of Australia's most accomplished contemporary music ensembles will be resident at the Festival. Brisbane based, it performs a wide range of Australian and international repertoire and specialises in site specific works which take contemporary music out of the concert hall and into dramatic contaxts which allow the music to be experienced on many levels.
