Description Sheridan Whiteside, a writer and critic, arrives for dinner. He is extremely rude, demanding, arrogant and insulting towards the other guests. Despite his hateful nature, Sheridan has an overwhelming number of friends and admirers. This play is based on a true event that occured when the playwright received Alexander Woollcott (real-life critic) as a guest for a night's dinner and entertainment. He also was known as a notoriously demanding person. Three other characters are also based on real-life personalities of fame.
