Description |
"Here, Brecht has re-written George Farquhar's comedy The Recruiting Officer, transferring the time from 1706 to 1776, when the British were fighting for their own colonies in the war of American Independence. While retaining many elements of the original classic, Brecht aims to give its theme greater point by referring not only to conscription and its injustices but to conscription for an unjust war waged by an imperialist nation, trumpeting and drumming to cries of patriotism". |
