| Description |
From Australia's pre-eminent theatre company comes a modern tragedy that since the play's hit premiere in 2005 has riveted audiences worldwide. Directed by Cate Blanchett, Sydney Theatre Company's co-Artistic Director designate, it is a brilliant, unnerving and controversial play that tests the limits of our taboos, exploring the fine line between love and abuse. Una confronts Ray at the cafeteria of the factory where he's a middling executive. He is 56, she is 27. Fifteen years ago they had an affair. Ray has served time for his actions, and now has a new identity and a new life. Una has thought of nothing else, and upon accidentally discovering a photo of Ray seeks him out with shattering consequences. David Harrower's intense psychodrama is written with extraordinary economy and a fine ear for the poetics of prose. Here are two complex and damaged individuals, full of rage and fear, but who have a strange, disturbing affinity. Blackbird is a powerhouse piece of theatre that both chills and thrills. |
