Notes The original Hoyleton Institute and library was located in the school building from 1883 to 1906. 21 locals were keen to build a dedicated institute building on a site donated by local W Saunders. The new institute building was completed in August 1908 and funded in part by the finances from the previous institute. The 45×25-foot brick and stone structure had 16-foot-high ceilings, a 10-foot-deep stage for performances and accommodated a library and reading room. Not long after the building was complete, the stage was flanked with stage doors at either end, and a stage curtain painted by scenic artist Nelson Wood installed. The stage doors and adjacent panel became artefacts of the history of performance at the institute, with the earliest inscription being some initials from 1912. As well as a range of community and performance events the hall was often used as a fundraising venue for a range of clubs and associations including the Limbless Soldiers Association; the Woodlands Tennis Club; a win-the war rally; Returned Soldiers Club; the Red Cross; the Rifle Club; and the Brighton Blind, Deaf and Dumb Institute.
