Description The Penwortham Merry Makers company was recognised for its original variety shows, which included musical and dramatic items as well as clowning, and they were reported to have performed concerts in the region during the early war years to raise funds for the Red Cross, the Fighting Forces Comforts Funds and Mr IS Scott’s Ugly Man Competition. The ugly man competition arose from a need to raise funds for the poor and homeless during the ravages of World War 1.
