Description Jimmy Porter and his long suffering, upper-class wife Alison are trapped in a self-destructive relationship, as their loyal friend Cliff is stuck in the middle - acting as peacemaker and the well-bred feisty Helena is determined to intervene.

The incendiary central character Jimmy, described as 'one of life's beautiful losers', rages against the machine; his invective tirades serving to underline what actually lies beneath this complex young man: anger and helplessness.
