| Description |
The play was first performed in Zurich in 1943. The title, like everything else about the play, is at once straightforward and contradictory. The "good person" is a victim of goodness; Szechwan is both an exotic fairy-tale Chinese province and a nightmare land of dog-eat-dog competition and exploitation. In short, this play is about the impulse to do good and the impossibility of doing good in the face of the need to survive at all costs. |
