Description |
Donne's lines: "This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere," could be applied to Marguerite Duras's piece, except that, unlike the lovers in Donne's poem, the man and the woman in La Maladie are unknown to each other. He asks and she consents to spend a week with him in a hotel room by the sea. The bed is set in the centre of the Albert Hall, around it the audience - the voyeurs - is seated at tables...there was no continuing speech between performers; Duras's narrative is read offstage by Boris Larazki. The characters communicate with almost imperceptible glances. |
