Description |
"Inspired by the Marguerite Duras' novel The Lover, Crossing the Water is a highly visual performance piece, which slips from image to voice, exploring the passion that is constant in Duras' work; painful and treacherous, self-conscious and restrained. Concepts of fiction and autobiography, memory, desire and mother - daughter conflict are set against issues of cultural expectation, the stark and relentless malaise of colonial occupation and the daughter - narrator's affair with a wealthy Chinese man.
Crossing the Water is a developmental work; the first stage of a bigger project exploring notions of dispossession." |
