"First performed in 1970 ... 'The Philanthropist' is also related to a classic of French literature: in this case, Molliere's 'Les Misanthrope', to which the play is a modern-day counterpart.
In direct opposition to Mollier's play, The Philanthropist revolves around a man who sees those in the world around him so uncritically that he in effect incurs a pathological terror of offending others.
