Description | "This is the second play of Theo Patrikareas's trilogy on Greek migration to Australia. The first play of the trilogy, The Promised Woman was produced by Sidetrack in 2000/1. The Promised Woman told of a recent migrant importing a woman from Greece to be his bride. The Uncle From Australia in a four-act farce structure, is almost its mirror image. Jimmy has been in Australia 35 years, he is selling his business to return to his home village and family. He may be after a bride but he also wants to kneel at his mothers's grave - and to tell the relatives tales of his endless hard work in Australia... Yet Jimmy has done well, his stash of $50,000 is a fortune in drachma and he's worried his relatives, always on the look out for a rich returning prodigal son, will beg, borrow or scam the lot. His solution (and herin lies the classic farce structure) is to pass as poor. And so to Greece where the last 3 acts of this wonderful comic fable explore a different type of cultural collision - between those who stayed and those who escaped to follow a dream.... the skill in narrative consruction and the wit of the satire is unblunted despite being 37 years old." |
