Description Sir Roger Casement, human rights campaigner and war hero, was hanged in 1916 for his involvement in the Irish Nationalist revolt in Dublin. Though his guilt was never in doubt, George V's government could not risk making an Irish folk hero out of him, so the "Black Diaries of Roger Casement", which expose him as a homosexual, were discovered and released. Within their pages are explicit details of Casement's life as a promiscious homosexual. Public figures who had sympathised with him distanced themselves and ceased their clemency calls that might have saved his life.
