Written in the mid 1960's it was Tom Stoppards first use of the Elixabethan era as the period for a contemporary play and an instant hit.Stoppard is well known for the Oscar winning screenplay Shakespeare in Love. Stoppard's leads are two minor characters from Hamlet who find themselves trying to rationalise the impossible and struggle to make sense of their circumstances. The two leads are thrust into an environment with no control . They keep trying to find out where and who they are and in the mean time engage in all sorts of discussions on life and death. |
