A comic opera set in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The story is woven around three main themes: Walter Raleigh's love for Bessie Throckmorton, Queen Elizabeth's fury at being slighted for another "Bessie" and the Earl of Essex's schemes to gain Elizabeth's hand. |
