Description |
Nick' s boarding house, Newtown 1963, is the setting for THE PROMISED WOMAN. It's the year of the Beatles, Dean Martin, the assassination of JFK, the beehive hairstyle and when thousands of new immigrants foremost of whom were the Greeks began to call Australia home. The play opens and Nick's place is soon thrown into confusion with the arrival of new boarder, Tellis, who becomes the envy of the other boarders when he flashes a photo of Antigone, his 'promised woman'. It is on the basis of this photograph which shows Antigone to be both young and beautiful that Tellis has fallen in love with with her and is bringing her to Australia. When Antigone arrives she is neither young nor particularly beautiful. Tellis is devastated. he rejects her and attempts to have her returned to Greece. For her part she obstinately refuses and then when Manolis, one of the other boarders falls in love with her Tellis has a change of heart and attempts to reclaim her as his bride. Antigone rejects them both. |
