Notes Mr Walter Bentley tells— in the light of his dramatic successes— a good story of one of his early performances on the stage in Dunedin. A performance had been got up for the benefit of the local boating club, and 'Richelieu' was the attraction, the principal character being played by the late William Hoskins. Mr Bentley only had a small part, and fully believed he had acquitted himself creditably, but at the close of the play a call boy or someone else occupying a very subordinate position came to him to summon him to Mr Hoskins' dressing room. Instead of the congratulations, which were almost looked for, Mr Bentley was met with a storm of indignation. 'Who told you that you could act?' exclaimed the veteran in tones of bitter scorn. 'You spoiled my best scenes, and the people will think I cannot act.' The budding artist felt considerably crushed, but that he was not daunted his subsequent career shows. (Otago Witness , Issue 1977, 14 January 1892, Page 36) Mr Walter Bentley's tour of the colony was a most successful one. He paid a visit to Wellington on Monday, to bring before the directors of the Opera House a scheme for forming a stock company to keep the theatre permanently open.
