Description "The Ballad of Mary Ann Brownlow is based on the true story of the last woman hanged in Goulburn and demonstrates the extraordinary fear of the male dominated society of the 1850s in regional New South Wales. The play is drawn from the courtroom transcripts and highlights the proceedings presided over by Justice Stephens, a circuit judge with a reputation for severe sentences. No case of Stephens created a greater stir than that of Mary Ann Brownlow, whom he had sentenced to death at the Goulburn Circuit Court on 11 September 1855 for the murder of her wastrel husband."
