Description Prince Siegfried has turned 21, and must choose a bride form the maidens assembled at his birthday ball. However, he has fallen in love with Odette, a beautiful swam princess, one of a flock of such maidens who inhabit a nearby lake. He has pledged his love to her, knowing that this will allow her to become a woman again. Seeing Odile, an identical young woman at the ball, he declares his love for her, only to discover hr has been tricked by the evil Rothbart, who holds power over the swan-maidens. Siegfried rushes to the lake, and he and his swan despairingly commit suicide in its cold waters.
