| Description |
The trouble with Yevgeny Schwartz's The Dragon lies in its futile attempt to marry comedy with an expression of protest and outrage at unhuman tyranny. How can you hope to render amusing a very bleak portrait of man copping out, preferring a fabricated world to autonomy and real despair? Well, the Dragon ends upa cross between the Grosz cartoons of Germany in the twentiess and thirties, and a rather coy caricature of children's theatre, an uncomfortable mixture which cancels out the strength either style would have on its own… The Downstage production tries very hard to inject votality and feeling into the piece. Nonnita Mann. has chosen to portray her characters as strip cartoon characters, suurounded by toy furniture and hardware. |
