Description The play was inspired by the discovery, in The Times newspaper of Wednesday, 9 September 1807, of a report of the bringing for trial of a gang of back-street juvenile pickpockets run by a boy called Ned Stirrick. It appeared on the evidence of the youngest, a boy of about 10 years of age, that Ned Stirrick went by the name of "Captain", that he gave the rest lessons in the art of picking pockets and that he rewarded them according to their successes. He gave the stolen goods to a fellow named William Perfect, who kept a stall for the sale of sausages. The report then goes on to list the children in the gang and names them and then explains how they were apprehended when Thomas Gray, the youngest, was caught in the act of pilfering. The authors developed these facts into a more extended form, introducing particularly the theme of puppets which were very popular at the Fairs of the time. The music is drawn mainly from contemporary sources. Many of the tunes were street ballads.
