| Abstract/Description |
In October 1834, 16-year-old Eliza Winstanley made her debut on the Sydney stage, playing Clari in Clari, or; The Maid of Milan, a popular operetta written by John Howard Payne with music by Henry Rowley Bishop (1823). In the 1830s, leading actresses Cordelia Cameron and Eliza Winstanley played the title role in Clari many times. Critics praised and compared the performances of Cameron and Winstanley. Numerous productions of the work, with many in the supporting cast played by the same performers, allowed for critics and the public to analyse the performance strategies and the interpretation each leading actress brought to the role. |
