Abstract/Description |
CO-OPERATION is the keynote of May Hollinworth's Metropolitan Theatre. Members pay a yearly fee of £2/2/-, and must take turns in acting — from lead to walk-on parts — mending carpets, building sets, prompting, ushering and making costumes.
Their tiny theatre holds 70 people. High up in Northcote House, Reiby Place, Sydney, it overlooks dustbins and the back of a hamburger shop. The theatre is so small the audience can almost touch the beautifully designed sets with one hand. Audience ritual is strict. No latecomers are permitted. Love of the theatre dominates the group. Most of the members have known the director, May Hollinworth, since her days as producer for the Sydney University Dramatic Society. Many of them are leading radio and stage stars. Sixteen are returned sevicemen. The audience pays a fee of £1/1/0 for the subscription season. The Metropolitan Theatre has been in existence two years and started in its present little theatre in March this year. Its aim — a permanent Repertory Theatre. |
