The Opening of the New Theatre Royal |
| Abstract/Description |
THE new Theatre Royal, Sydney, stands on the exact site of the old Prince of Wales' Theatre, destroyed by fire, in 1872. Its dimensions are : extreme length, 136 feet, of which 70 feet are devoted to the auditorium, and 66 to the stage ; breadth, from wall to wall, 60 feet ; and height of walls 45 feet. The interior was fully described in the Illustrated Sydney News for December 11th, 1875, and its comfort and beauty appear to be fully appreciated by the public. The opening night attracted about 2700 persons, which is, at least, 200 more than the highest aspirations of the architect estimated that the building would hold, when crammed to its fullest capacity. |
