| Abstract/Description |
Regarded as one of Goldoni's masterpieces, The Boors is as much a social comment on codes of the day as it is comic - pompous middleaged, wealthy businessmen ruling their households with rods of iron forbidding the frivolities of Venice at Carnival time, Lunardo and Maurizio arrange marriage between their children Lucietta and Filipetto. The two have never met and the fathers in their boorishness insist that they must not see each other until the wedding day. The ladies of the families conspire to outwit their husbands through the machinations of the outspoken Felice and her foppish friend Count Riccardo, the masquerades and mistaken identities, all set against the excitement and colour of 18th Century Venice, from the prelude to the happy ending of this delicious comedy. |
