Enter your search words into the home page search box.

A good way to start is to enter some words from the name of:
- an Event which may be a play, a production or an arts activity
- a Contributor who may be a Playwright, an Actor, a Director or an Artist (just to name a few)
- an Organisation or a Venue, in Australia or Internationally
- a Work which may be have multiple performances or just a few
- ... or a combination of these.
Click the Search button or hit enter to perform your search. AusStage will retrieve all the results which match your search words.
To focus your Basic Search, you may also filter by Events, Contributors, Organisations, Venues or Works. As per the information below, simply click on the button(s) of your choice and click on Search. To remove filter(s) click on ALL to return to a full search.
Search criteria
Select what you want to search for.
- Events (default). An Event is a discrete happening, defined by title, date and Venue, typically a performance or run of performances at a Venue. The search will retrieve a list of Events matching your search words.
- Contributors. A Contributor is an individual who contributes to creating, performing or producing an Event. The search will retrieve a list of matching Contributors.
- Organisations. An Organisation is a group or company involved in creating, performing or producing an Event. The search will retrieve a list of matching Organisations.
- Venues. A Venue is a place where an Event happens. The search will retrieve a list of matching Venues.
- Works. A Work is the abstract conception of an Event, typically a play script or score, distinguished by title and creator/s. The search will retrieve a list of matching Works.

Sort results
On the Search Results page select how you would like the results to be sorted.
- Name: to sort all Search Results - Events, Contributors, Venues, Organisations and Works - by title or name.
- Type: to sort all Search Results by record type: Events, Contributors, Organisations, Venues and Works.
- Year: to sort all Search Results by time in chronological order, forward or reverse.
- Place/Source: to sort Events, Organisations and Venues according to geo location.
- Function/Genre: to sort Contributors and Events by core Contributor Function and primary Event Genre.
- Events: to sort by the number of Events associated with the record.
- Resources: to sort by the number of Resources associated with the record.
- Identifier: to sort by the Identifier which is unique reference number for every record in AusStage.
Filter by Time
Filter by a year (eg 1999) or year range (eg 2002 - 2012) for the Events, Contributors, Venues, Organisations or Works in the Search Results.
Capitalisation
The word search is not case sensitive. Variations in capitalisation will not affect the search results.
Diacritics
The word search is flexible with diacritics. For example, searching for 'Francois' will find 'François' and vice versa.
Access the Advanced Search options via the Advanced Search button on the home page (under the Basic Search box) or the Advanced Search button on the Search Results page. 
An Event is a discrete happening, defined by title, date and venue, typically a performance or run of performances at a Venue. Multiple presentations of the same production at different Venues (e.g. touring productions) are recorded as separate Events.
Use Advanced Event Search to search for specific Events. Provide enough information to identify the Event or set of Events you wish to retrieve.
- Event Name: The title or name of an Event.
- Event ID: A unique number identifying an Event in AusStage.
- First Date: The day, month and year of the Event's first public presentation, including previews. Enter year or year and month if complete date is unknown.
- Venue Name: The name of the Venue where an event happens.
- Venue ID: A unique number identifying the Venue where an event happens.
- State: The Australian state or territory where the Event happens.
- Umbrella: The festival or series in which an Event is presented.
- Primary Genre: A category indicating the kind of Event, as defined by its main mode of performance - select one.
- Secondary Genre: A category indicating the kind of Event, or aspects of an Event, as defined by the style, content and mode of performance - multiple selections may be made using the control or command key.
- Content Indicator: A subject term or keyword describing the topic of an Event's content - what an Event is about, its narrative, theme, concerns etc.
- Origin of Text: A country of origin for the text used in an Event.
- Origin of Production: A country of origin of the production.
- Organisation Name: The name of an organisation associated with an Event.
- Organisation Function: The function of an organisation associated with an Event, eg 'Production company', 'Presenting company'.
- Organisation ID: A unique number identifying an organisation in AusStage.
- Contributor Name: The name of a contributor associated with an Event.
- Contributor Function: The function of a contributor associated with an Event, eg actor, designer, director, playwright.
- Contributor ID: A unique number identifying a contributor in AusStage.
- Sort by: Select to sort the results by Title, Date, Venue or State.
The search returns a list of Events matching the information you provide. The more information you provide, the narrower your search. If your search retrieves no results, try providing less information.
A Resource is a review, programme, photograph, video, book, article, collection etc. Resources convey information about events, contributors, organisations and venues. Some Resources exist as individual items stored in collections (eg programs, posters, photographs). Other Resources exist as multiple copies in libraries (books, journals, articles and so on).
Use Advanced Resource Search to search for specific Resources. Provide enough information to identify the Resource or set of Resources you wish to retrieve.

Title: A name given to a Resource. For example, the title of a book, a chapter or an article; a caption for a photograph or illustration.

Creator: An individual or organisation responsible for contributing to the Resource. eg the editor of an anthology, the translator of a play script.

Source: The Resource from which the described Resource is derived. Used for Resources which are included within or part of other Resources. For example, the newspaper is the source for a newspaper article; the journal is the source for a journal article; an anthology is the source for a chapter; a collection is the source for an item within that collection.

Keywords: Search words from the title, alternative title, description or abstract of the Resource.

Date: The creation, publication copyright or accession date of a Resource.

Type: The type of Resource - multiple selections may be made using the control or command key.

Collecting Institution: The name of the organisation which holds the Resource.
- Work: A Work referred to by a Resource. Work associations are created where a Resource relates, for example, to a dramatic work, rather than to an actual production.

Event: An Event associated with or referred to by the Resource. Event associations occur where a Resource is created in the process of making or responding to an Event.

Contributor: A Contributor referred to by a Resource. Contributor associations are created where a Resource depicts or describes a Contributor.

Venue: A Venue referred to by a Resource. Venue associations are created where a Resource depicts or describes a Venue.

Organisation: An Organisation referred to by a Resource. Organisation associations are created where a Resource depicts or describes an Organisation.

Sort results by Resource Type, Title, Source and Date - select one.
The search returns a list of Resources matching the information you provide. The more information you provide, the narrower your search. If your search retrieves no results, try providing less information.
A Financial table record is a Financial Record for an AusStage Contributor or Organisation. Financial Record data may be from annual reports, financial statements, grant acquittal data or other publicly available finance sources.
Use Advanced Finance Search to search for Financial Records. Provide enough information to identify the Financial Record(s) you wish to retrieve.
The Advanced Finance Search returns a list of Financial Records matching the information you provide in the Financial Search Results page. To change the search criteria select the Filters button on this page to return to the Search page. The more information you provide, the narrower your search. If your search retrieves no results, try providing less specific information.
Full versions of publicly available Financial Records (eg Annual Reports) may be available through the linked Resources-Report links on the Contributor or Organisation record (located at the bottom of the associated AusStage record when available).
Please note that there are a limited number of Financial Records currently available as this module was newly incorporated into AusStage in 2023.
