The Queen’s Wall public artwork was commissioned by the South Australian Department of Premier and Cabinet in 2024. The physical artwork is attached to the west wall of Adelaide’s Queen’s Theatre at the Corner of Gilles Arcade and Playhouse Lane in Adelaide: its digital content is delivered through the Queen’s Wall App and the Queen’s Wall website. Mary Moore and Sandpit designed The Queen’s Wall as an interactive promenade. It is a ‘living wall’, drawing its inspiration from the world of theatre. The archival research that supported the creation of the Queen’s Wall was managed through AusStage and originated with the Lost Theatres Project.
The Queen’s Theatre is an important South Australian heritage site; it was the first public gathering place in Adelaide and is the oldest mainland theatre still in use in Australia. From its grand opening in 1841 by Emanuel Solomon to its time as the Supreme Court, a Horse Bazaar, and even an auto-part factory, the Queen’s Theatre has stood witness to nearly two centuries of Adelaide’s cultural, economic and social evolution.
