| Description | Dido and Aeneas is classified as England's oldest opera - its first performance being in 1689 at a girls' school in Chelsea. Originally adapted from part of Virgil's Aeneid, Dido and Aeneas tells of the Queen of Carthage falling in love with Aeneas, who has fled to Carthage after the defeat at the Trojan War. It has been prophesised that Aeneas will be the founder of the Roman Empire. On his departure from Carthage, Dido, broken hearted, sings one of the most moving laments in opera. |
