Description Arthur Kipps, an orphan, is employed as an apprentice by the surly Mr Shalford in a drapery emporium. Shalford insists his drapery is run by "System, Fishency and Economy". Kipps lives and works in his small world with his fellow employees, Sid Pronick, Buggins and Pearce. He betrothes himself to Sid's sister, Ann, by exchanging tokens: "Half a Sixpence".
