Description Kwan-Yin is the patron saint of women in China. They turn to her in grief, of her they beg progeny. She has been the central figure in the inner apartment for many centuries.

In ancient China the courtship between man and maid was always formal. The term for kissing did not exist. Display of affection, spoken of as to "smell the face," only took place in private. Even on the stage, love scenes are so delicate and so restrained as to be, to the uniniated, scarcely recognizeable.
