Description "A cappella and butoh performance collaboration.
The feeling and emotion projected by Mari-Jon's voice is the same feeling and emotion expressed by dancer, Andrew Madden's movement. Both artists are communicating the same message. The voice moves the body, however his ?vice? is movement and cannot be hear, only seen and felt?"

"Mari-Jon Berna and Andrew Madden are collaborating for the first time in this premiere season of "Portraits of the Soul". It is planned that later in 1995 the production will travel to both New York and London.

"Portraits of the Soul" is a unique collaboration of two forms of artistic expression not generally associated with each other. Voice; opera and soft blues performed a cappella, and dance/ movement; inspired by Japanese butoh performance and personal interpretations of various indigenous dance styles. The performance is inspired by the awareness of "the 'interconnectedness' of all things", nurturing an absolute trust in the instinctive energy, prior to conscious recognition, created by the total environment in the theatre space. In this unique experience one is stimulated and prompted to become involved in perceiving, feeling and experiencing the emotional depths housed inherently within all of us.

The feeling and emotion projected by Mari-Jon's voice is the same feeling and emotion expressed by Andrew's movement. Both artists are communicating the same message. The voice moves the body, however his 'voice' is movement and cannot be heard, only seen and felt."
