In 1454 two noblemen vied for the hand of Lionora, daughter of Lord Marostica, and challenged each other to a duel. To avoid war Lord Marostica forbade the duel and decided they should play a game of chess for the hand and heart of Lionora...Every two years, this chess game is enacted in front of the castle of the city of Marostica, near Venice. | |
