| Description |
This play is about a mixed-ethnic marriage, between Greek Nick and Jewish Sophie....It's themes are those of love, birth, death and the drive to reproduce. When Sophie proves unable to have children and develops cervical cancer, Nick mourns the Greek imperative to have children. He allows himself to be seduced by a Greek girl Kira, who becomes pregnant and moves into his house, at Sophie's invitation. Her baby dies at birth while Nick ministers to the dying Sophie. Subsequently Nick and Kiri marry and have a son, but in the absence of love even a child cannot hold the relationship together. |
