| Description |
Pride and prejudice are among the failings found in most of the oden-day Babas and Nonyas. Rather than dramatize these weaknesses, Pileh Menantu, or Choosing a Daughter-in-Law was written with more than a touch of humour. Indeed, the comical moments in the play justify a definition of light comedy. The scene is Singapore in the 1930s. The rather insipid young son of a Singapore Baba family has taken a fancy to his neighbour's daughter, and he wants to marry her. While his father is not too concerned with lineage, his mother holds a different view. |
