For over an hour, the seven Black grace dancers are a sea of restless movement, a turbulent exchange of dynamic strength. There are some quiet moments when, standing with chests heaving, they softly sculpt the air with arms and hands…. The middle section has an especially Pacific feel. To a sound score of sea rushing to shore, the choreographic patterns suggest breaker action and deep-ocean swell. A white cloth stretching across the stage becomes an image of a wake, and then folds into a sail, which is reassembled to suggest a shipwreck - the initially proud sailors collapsing. Further manipulated, the cloth is held as a net that serves as a screen for a video projection of sea, mountains, landscape … |
