Description George Windlestraw fails in his accountancy examinations, loses his job, falls in love (or thinks he does), rejects orthodox, respectable channels of rehabilitation, clears out from home, and, by miraculous luck, and by characteristically unorthodox methods —to wit, gambling—wins a considerable fortune within a few hours, and returns home in time to save the family business from bankruptcy. He often speaks directly to the audience, in front of the curtain.
