An unscrupulous knight (Sir Giles) has by his fraudulent scheming succeeded in beggaring, amongst many others, a wild young spendthrift nephew. He has allowed his avarice to harden his heart to that extent that his delight is not merely in acquiring wealth, but in acquiring it by crooked means. But avarice is not his ruling passion; he is the slave of ambition, though the ambition is of a kind which consorts well with the inherent meanness of an avaricious mind. He has an only daughter, and his ambition is to marry her to a title, so that she shall become a Right Honorable. The play shows how his schemes are laid and how they are frustrated, ending in his death in a fit, induced by his extreme rage at the discovery of the manner in which he has been tricked. … |
