| Description |
The plot of 'David Garrick' is founded on an apochryphal incident in the life of the great Drury Lane player. The daughter of a rich East Indian supposed to have fallen in love with Garrick, from having seen him play, and her father sends for Garrick, explains to him the circumstances, and asks him to cure the girl of her infatuation. Garrick undertakes the task, and in pursuance of it visits the Nabob's house, mingles with the guests, and discovers that the daughter who had fallen in love with him was a young attendant at his theatre with whom he had himself fallen in love. Garrick however, having given his word, carried out his painful contract, and behaved so disreputably that the girl herself ordered him out of the house. A good angel finally appears on the scene, and straightens out the tangled skein of incident to a satisfactory extent. |
