Kahurangi, founded in 1983, is a national, cultural and employment programme, dedicated to encouraging cultural understanding among people of all nations. It is based in Hastings, and its founder and artistic-executive director is Tama Huata, who also composes the music. Kahurangi uses students and graduates of the Takitimu Performing Arts School, aged between 17 and 24. Participants perform not only in theatres, but present extensive theatre-in-education programmes in schools, kohanga reo, hospitals and welfare institutions. They also frequently perform overseas, including Canada, United States and Mexico. |
