…Director Simon Ferry largely lets the play speak for itself without distorting overlays of interpretation. His in-the-round Venice board walk set has a twenty four hour sundial face at its centre, adorned with astrological constellations and a sunken, ruined column. Ian Harman's green and brown silk cloth costumes put men in external corsets and women in flowing gowns that would all look at home on today's fashion catwalks. The suitors are stylised with exotic animal and dark leather-look commedia masks…. |
