…The play has bursts of activity but little dramatic action. Some lively verbal exchanges in the first act between the two archangels come cloest to drama; the piece of slapstick in the third [act] sounds a grotesque literary exercise. The story is used as a means of expressing ideas, rather than to bring persons or even interests together in conflict. The persons meet and converse to exchange information and deliver orations… [They speak in iambic pentameter.] |
