Description … Setting out to trace the progress of the family of humankind from the cradle of social consciousness to, nt the grave of atomic nihilism, but the egg of evolving nature, this cyclical comedy on a cosmic scale begins with some of the old familiar masks of the country's not too distant forbears. At a drawing-room afternoon tea in a New Zealand country township sometime in the 1880s are gathered together members of two families: the heads urging and opposing the mechanization of the country's transport, the spouses and offspring concerned with their own standards of comfort and survival, and tow outside representatives of free and dogmatic thought, schoolmaster and clergyman respectively….

Further Information This is the second of Frank Sargeson's plays to have skirted the scene of the Auckland Festival. Perhaps next year the Committee will have the intelligence and the manners to celebrate the presence of a most esteemed author by producing one of his plays as a feature of the Festival. Or must native drama continue to give way before the overseas and over-rated 'real' thing?
