| Description |
As You Like It played agreeable variations in the contemporary manner on the romantic and comic pastoralism of the theme without introducing any distracting innovations. Although it is a dull play on the page the company made it an engaging and even moving one and persuaded us that the taste for pastoral is not simply an outmoded Elizabethan fashion… [The set] was drab, with too much tawdry detail; the hard straight overhead borders, the 1920 formalism of the tab curtains, of the forest backcloth and the individual leaves and trees, earthbound the production where the imagination wanted to soar. The Utopian summer forest scene suffered most from this restriction: the set aimed at elfconscious gracefulness and achieved only a two-dimensional self-assertiveness…. The set and costumes were in different modes which did not always harmonize. This was apparent in the court scenes where actors in what the programme called Van Dyke costume played againnst the 1920 tab curtains, whose insistent design made them unadaptable to the many uses they were put to. The subdued colour of set and costumes was not helped by the over-use of steel-blue light. |
