| Description |
At the end of the first act of The Importance of Being Earnest I was in a state of mild shock. Had I really seen Gwendolen goose Jack? Did Algy's manservant, Lane, eat the cucumber sandwiches and smoke Algy's cigarettes? Was Jack paying too much attention to Lane, who appeared like rough trade that Wilde might have picked up in Piccadilly? It is obvious from all this that the well-known firm of theatrical renovators, McColl and Rabbit, is up to its old trick of unsettling us, making us see a classic in a fresh way. |
