'In order that the action not be interrupted for lumbering scene changes, Tony Geddes and I have created a device rather like a child's 'fold-out' book. This, and the frequent reference to clothes and journals about fashion, led us one step further to the frontispiece and the fashionplates. This, in turn, begot the idea of having Oliver Goldsmith himself conduct us - albeit rather precariously and drunkenly - through his play. The prologue, in rhymed couplets, written by another hand to introduce a comedy, was a common convention. In this way Goldlsmith, we hope, provides an easy bridge between our own times and this golden play - the opera that Mozart should have written'. |
